Electronic and photonic states in inhomogeneous media

Abstract

This dissertation addresses certain problems in the theory of two-dimensional disordered electron systems. We show that an approximate semianalytical description of the integer quantum Hall transition can be constructed by means of a real-space renormalization group procedure for the Chalker-Coddington network model. For two-dimensional electrons with spin-orbit (SO) coupling we calculate the density of states within the coherent potential approximation, and show that the result becomes asymptotically exact in the limit of strong SO coupling.
