Application of a direct regional activity characterization approach to focal uptake activity quantification in pinhole SPECT
Abstract
2119
Objectives
The goal was to evaluate a direct regional activity characterization approach (DRAC) and compare it with 3 other methods for focal uptake (FU) estimation in pinhole SPECT.
Methods
The DRAC approach [1] assumes the intensity distribution of a FU image can be modeled as a Gaussian function and estimates the FU activity using a new iterative ML (v+g) algorithm. This work focused on FU activity estimation using simulations in single pinhole (SPH) SPECT applications. A phantom consisting of a cylinder with 15 mm diameter and 20 mm height, and a 3 mm diameter sphere placed at the center of the FOV and 12 mm from the cylinder’s center, was used in this study. Analytical projections of the phantom were generated with a dual head SPH SPECT geometry. To simulate FU variations, cylinder-to-sphere activity ratios were varied. For each variation, Poisson noise was added to the projections at 5 …
