System calibration method for a CZT detector based ring-type small animal SPECT system

Objectives
Accurate system calibration (SC) is important for the performance of a CZT detector based SPECT system. Our goal was to develop a SC method for a ring-type SPECT system composed of 95 MR-compatible CZT detector modules for small animal SPECT-MR imaging.
Methods
The detector pixel uniformity was measured using a custom-made annular shell phantom with uniform shell thickness that fits tightly inside the ring SPECT system without the collimator. The phantom was filled with 15 µCi of Tc-99m solution and listmode data were acquired from the system. From the data, a 10% energy window was centered around the Tc-99m photopeak for each pixel and each window’s position on its pixel’s pulse height spectrum was stored for processing experimental data.
