Development and initial testing of a second generation SPECT insert for simultaneous small animal SPECT-MR imaging
Abstract

Objectives
To develop and test a 2nd generation SPECT insert for simultaneous small animal (SA) SPECT-MR imaging.
Methods
A 2nd generation SPECT insert fits inside a SA MRI system with a minimum 20cm bore. It has 5 contiguous cylindrical rings of 19 CZT detectors (2.54x2.54cm2, 16x16 pixel) per ring. Ferromagnetic materials were avoided in component selection. Two different multipinhole (MPH) collimator sleeves (CS) that fit inside the detector ring have different pinhole aperture designs and patterns for high-resolution and dynamic mouse SPECT imaging. The CSs were made with high density (HD) tungsten powder, the pinhole apertures with HD tungsten. The performance of the MPH-CSs was evaluated using computer simulation before fabrication. Sparse-view image reconstruction methods are used to reduce CS rotation. A birdcage transmit/receive RF coil fits inside the MPH-SC and wraps …
